Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a translator or an interpreter?

Translators translate the written word.  Interpreters interpret the spoken word.  If you need written documents translated, then you need a translator.  This is a service we provide.  If you need an interpreter, that is not a service we provide.  You can search for an interpreter in your area, or one that specializes in your field and/or provides remote services at https://www.atanet.org/.

Why not just use a machine translation?

Machine translations have come a long way.  They can be very helpful, although can’t always recognize the proper context of a word or phrase.  Many times a word has multiple translations, and a machine can’t always recognize this.  This is particularly true for specific terms in an industry.  Sometimes, the natural rhythm of a language may also be a bit off.  In any event, a machine translation will always have to be reviewed by a human.  If you have a rush document, this may be an option for you, and one that we can provide if this is something you are interested in.

Why use a professional translator?

A professional translator is trained in proper grammar, syntax, and linguistic style, and will be able to distinguish proper word choice.  Your document will read as though it was originally written in the target language (and is not a translation).  Professional translators are masters of language.

What can I do to make the most of my money?

Translations are not cheap.  Things that you can do to make the most of your money:

  1. Be sure your document is complete and final before turning it over to the translator.  It is not cost effective to turn a draft version over to a translator that will require future edits.  Wait until it is final and complete.

  2. Ensure that your document is well written.  Shorter and concise sentences are better than longer and wordier ones.  This is true for any technical document.

  3. Allow your translator enough time to do their job properly.  You have invested considerable time to perfect your document; allow your translator the same courtesy.  There is no point in taking days/weeks/months to perfect your document, and then rush your translator.

Why not go with a big translation company?

You could do this.  But big translation companies who specialize in several languages and/or several subject areas simply contract independent translators who are specialized in a particular area/field.  At Translations Mexico, we only translate from Spanish – English and we specialize in this area.  Many times with big translation companies you are getting a translation from an independent translator who is contracted through a big agency.  At Translations Mexico we specialize in Spanish – English translations for the mining/environmental fields.  That is all we do.  You are contracting directly with us and thereby eliminating the middle man.  This is cost effective for you.
